Being able to identify negative thought patterns and turn them into positive ones is a vital part of finding happiness in your life. Negative thoughts and thinking are common among most people and the truth is most people are not even aware of it.

1. I Am A Failure….
Let’s face it. We all have been in situations where we may not have succeeded as we had hoped for. I know I have had my short comings. BUT, when you look at your situations as failures it only makes you feel horrible about yourself. Choosing to do this only creates a negative image of yourself and allows no room for happiness.
Solution: Do not focus on any temporary setbacks, rather focus on all your successes. Take time to look back in your life, a month ago, 1 year, and 5 years ago, and think about all your successes. Then start writing them down and documenting each day and weekly successes and you will be amazed at yourself. It is a great feeling!
2. I Can’t….
If you do not think that you are capable of doing something, then most likely you can’t. The reality is, motivation or discipline has little to do with it, focus is everything. So when you focus on what you cannot accomplish then it becomes your reality. Your negative thoughts hinder you from succeeding.
Solution: Have you heard the saying “if at first you don’t succeed, try and try again?” It is true. If you do not achieve what you had hoped for, learn from the mistakes you have made, and then do it again. Do not put the goal for a future date, focus on it now, and approach one goal at a time and put all your energy into it. It helps if you include others and have them help you as much as possible. It all starts with positive thinking!
3. The Idea That Bad Things Always Happen To me….
Throughout life things happen to us that is unexpected and unwanted, however, it is inevitable and out of our control. Often we dwell on those unexpected things and allow them to bring us down.
Solution: Accept these situations as going with the flow of life. They are not good nor are they bad. We have experiences that cause suffering, but that is only a condition that comes and then passes. In time, the pain goes away, so do not dwell on it and let it hold you back. Learn to take those situations as lessons and grow from them. If you view those “bad” things as opportunities, then you will continue to grow and become stronger!
4. I Will Be Happy When…
Let’s be honest. If you think that your happiness is determined by a certain point or reaching a certain income or when you get a certain car or home, you will NEVER be happy. You make this goal elusive and unachievable because it is always out of reach. When you reach a goal, then you no longer will be satisfied and always want more.
Solution: Attitude of gratitude! Learn to be happy with where you are in life, with what you have, and count your blessings. Happiness should be found in the now, not some state you search for and never find. Focus on the positive in all situations. This may seem simple yet powerful and it works.
5. I Wish I was as ___ as ___….
The fact is, there will always be someone better than you, prettier than you, more talented than you somewhere in the world if you look hard enough. When you constantly compare yourself to others you will feel badly about who you are and continue to fail. This will not lead to happiness.
Solution: Focus on your strengths, your accomplishments, and your successes rather than beating yourself up and comparing yourself to others. Learn to love yourself for who you are at this moment in time and not who you were or who you want to become. We are all encompassed with good, love, and a beautiful human spirit!
